Sage 300 is more than just accounting software, it is an enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution. It connects core business operations like accounting, distribution, warehousing, manufacturing and integrates sales, marketing, customer service and business analytics. Sage 300 supports multiple currencies, tax jurisdictions and a massive number of account combinations. This allows you manage multiple business units in a unified environment.

User Interface

Sage has a menu with tasks grouped in folders. Reports are in one folder, transactions in another. There is also a flow chart style menu called Visual Process Flows which many people prefer. Sage 300 is a batch system so transactions are entered into a batch and posted together. While this method is efficient for large numbers of transactions results are only updated when the batch is posted.

Capacity

Sage 300 has a huge capacity because it uses SQL to store its data. It suits large organizations because it allows accounts to made up of ten segments like division, territory or product line. It will retain up to 99 years of history. You can choose to keep only the relevant history because it allows you to remove inactive information. Sage 300 takes security very seriously. They provide a method to control what screens and which accounts a person may view.

Flexibility

Sage 300 is flexible. You can run it as a desktop app, in the cloud, or in a web browser. It allows you to add users as required. Features stay hidden until you need them. You can turn them on with one click. Account numbers can be long or short. Sage assigns document numbers automatically. Numbers can be as long as 22 characters. Add a web store that integrates with your inventory and price list with a third-party add-ons. Save time by exporting, editing and importing large lists in a spreadsheet.

Reports

Sage 300 includes a large number of reports. You can install the Crystal Report Designer and customize reports if desired, but that is not necessary because of generous selection criteria. To view financial reports like Balance Sheet and Income Statement, you open the Financial Reporter. There is no programming required because financial reports rely on account classifications. You assign accounts classifications from the list provided or add your own. Sage provides 23 different financial reports. You can modify them easily because they are Excel templates. The Excel file specifies the layout. Current period and year to date columns are standard. You can choose from many others to add things like budget etc.

Business Insights

Business Intelligence offers a superior experience. There is no need to create a spreadsheet every time because the software updates the results, preserving the rest of the spreadsheet. It can extract data from different locations for comparison or consolidation. You can toggle between dates, breakout or combine results.

Deployment

Sage can be installed on a desktop or on a web server. Use both methods simultaneously. Cloud applications simplify maintenance because software updates only need to be installed once. Sage runs on Microsoft servers. You may opt for a hosted solution to avoid purchasing and maintaining your own servers. Contact me for a list of qualified providers in Canada.
